I reckon you've heard of the name Conrad Sheldon; else you wouldn't be here. Everyone in Hicksville knows his name. He was born with a rare learning disorder. All throughout his days, he was licked in every task by no fault of his own. He struggled as he might to spell, but he served his purpose well.

You see, Conrad Sheldon had a heart of pure gold. Most folks, well, they never back down from a fight. Conrad was different. Conrad would face a fight with a kind of innocence about him. Some of them folks wrote it off as mere ignorance. Conrad just sought to share in his love of life. He knew nothing of resentment. Hicksville is a better place having known him.

If you should permit me the time, I'll tell you more about Conrad Sheldon.

What was that? The next bus out of Hicksville aint for another three hours yet. Sure, we have plenty of time. Allow me to start from the beginning...
Life, the ultimate expression of self. To experience that which cannot be experienced in any other form. The unknown; the uncertainty; the risk which arises only from the act of being physically tethered. Life is, in and of itself, a school system. A place to learn; to grow; to evolve consciousness. A place to experience a wide range of emotions. One cannot truly appreciate happiness without knowing sadness, and one cannot know sadness without knowing happiness. It is the yin and the yang of existence. We are the universe experiencing itself and our journey has only just begun...

It expands on the Cherry Blossom Lake story first introduced in that series and follows in greater detail the first encounters of Aratana and Noemi, two free spirits who meet by the lake side. It was originally intended to be multiple chapters in length, but it proved more difficult to write a pure love story than I had originally expected.

Chapter 1: 生命の美しさ (Beauty of Life)

Our story begins one magical afternoon at Cherry Blossom Lake. It was a day unlike any other. Spring was well underway and Japan was alive with the colors of the season. I had just eaten lunch at a nearby restaurant. Upon my departure, I could not help but admire the spectacle of the cherry blossoms. I took a seat beside the lake. Park benches always inflicted on me a fair bit of sorrow. I would often find myself sitting alone for periods of time. Sure, others would sometimes pass, but there were no real connections. I would instead use those times to clear my mind, with varying degrees of success.

This day was quite different. On this day, I was filled with overwhelming joy as a magnificent woman appeared, as if from nowhere, and sat beside me. She asked in a loving voice, "Do you come here often?" I replied with a smile, "Actually, this is my first time." She smiled back and said, "You couldn't have picked a better time. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom." I looked her in the eyes and said, "It really is quite lovely. I wish it were like this every day." She glanced down at the palm of my hand and said, "Is that a fortune cookie?" I was, at first, hesitant to reveal its contents, but I finally budged and said, "Why, yes. I just had lunch and this was in my order. It reads: Today will be a very good day. Today you will find your destiny." She gave me a blind stare and said, "Well?" Confused, I replied, "Well... what?" She said with a smile across her face, "Did you find your destiny?" I replied with butterflies in my stomach, "I believe so, yes."

A prefecture known as Hiroshima. As I began writing about the events of August 6th, 1945, I wondered if I really had any business there. My stories often deal with the hardships of death, but this was in a whole other category.

Chapter 1: Saisho no Suteppu (The First Step)

"Please give me the light of your wisdom; to dispel the darkness of my mind and heal my mental continuum," said a noticeably anxious young woman. She went on to say, "I must seek work this morning. It is required of me, but at the same time, it is frowned upon." The woman picked up a single incense stick and placed it in the bowl before her. She closed her eyes and proceeded to recite a mantra; "Om Mani Padme Hum." She concluded the session with a selfless wish. "May all beings be well, happy and peaceful," she said as she collected herself and her belongings. Sunlight drenched the temple. Outside, a bevy of wild flowers were blooming. There were faint signs of life off in the distance. The woman quickly made her way down the steps and began her trek into town. This would be a historic day.

Actual events blended with fiction. If you should find a few truths along the way, that is okay.

Just what the hell happened in Just Another Day's final chapter?

I get asked this question a lot. Like, three whole people already! Just Another Day came about in the aftermath of two sudden losses. My uncle and aunt passed away just a week apart in the spring of 2014. Not very long after which, a rather severe debate engulfed much of the family on Facebook. I eventually took it upon myself to quit the service. I would come to find solace in creative writing. I have always admired the serenity of Japanese culture and wanted to tell a story that began there. As the story came into fruition, it became clear that I myself was Aratana Hajimari - I myself would die that day. Nobody wants to picture their own death, but it presented me with an interesting writing challenge. Just how would I process everything in my final hours on Earth? And what ultimately caused my fatal heart attack? It led to a somewhat horrific third chapter. I knew that I would have to deal with something difficult. More difficult than my own death. The story sadly dictated the revelation that my eldest brother, Patrick, had passed away a year earlier. Having lived in Japan for twenty-something years, I had naturally lost touch with the family. It weakened my heart enough to become the catalyst for my own death later in that chapter. Foreshadowing can sometimes be a bitch.

It deals primarily with a retrieval mission in The Ether. A dense, boundless region of the subconscious world where wayward travellers sometimes become lost without help from others.

Retrieval in the Dark

It was just another day in The Park. The energy so bright and inviting. The various life centers bustling with activity. I had arranged to assist in a retrieval mission. A poor soul had become trapped in The Ether and was draining the energies of others passing through the region. I learned everything I could about the individual in the library. He had died suddenly when his car slammed into an oncoming bus. It was a particularly brutal scene.

I centered my thoughts on the dense, unending region. His aura was easy enough to identify. A darkened blob. It appeared to me as if a black hole in deep space. I felt myself being tugged inward. I held my composure and allowed my energy to merge with his. Inside which, I discovered a dank wooded area. There were no signs of life, but there was a very muddy dirt patch. The dirt was like quicksand. I stepped around it as best I could.

There, off in the distance, sat a scared man clinging to a train ticket. I said to the man, "Why do you sit here in the dark?" He looked me in the eye and said, "I just wanted to go to the fair. I was going to meet someone special there." I looked around the man's self created landscape and said, "There's nothing fair about this place. If you don't mind me saying so, it's a dump." He let slip a light chuckle. In tears, he said simply, "You must love wordplay."

I said with enthusiasm, "If you follow me, I can unite you with many special someones!" The man lit up as I extended my hand and guided him away from the dank wooded area. We arrived back in The Park. His soul group was waiting for him there. Their energy manifested ever so brightly. It was a very good retrieval. Easier than most.

Upon returning to my personal sanctuary, I was taken aback by a calling from Earth. My son, Mike, had been trying to reach me for awhile. His thoughts articulated to, "Remember how much fun we had on Soarin' Over California, Dad? I'm still in disbelief. Disney closed it to make way for a new film. It's now Soarin' Around the World. Do you think it possible we could twist the hands of fate one more time?"

I was already there. I was everywhere. But for the sake of a story...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5363447071782518527.post-41118937548934789882016-05-14T11:05:00.003-07:002021-10-02T22:25:36.856-07:00Just Another Day 2: Perchance to DreamJust Another Day 2 is a story set nine years after Just Another Day. Once more, it is meant to inspire. It is, after all, a work of fiction. If you find a few truths along the way, that is okay.

Since the dawn of ages, dreams have played an important role in the evolution of mankind. Without them, there would be no innovation - no change. For they are what drive the spirit of man forward. That which gives them their passion - their sense of ambition. Dreams can sometimes carry quite powerful messages. Often overlooked in a constantly advancing world. One need only listen and the truths of the universe will become known. A world unto itself awaits those with patience...

Inc. (Aborted)A Day at fizz! Inc. was originally intended to be the spiritual successor to the first Just Another Day story. Positioning Mark's son, Liam, not only as the lead character, but the new boss of plop! Plutonium(tm) operations. This story instead became the basis for the "Project Dandelion" story in Just Another Day 2: Perchance to Dream, with Liam himself appearing full-time for only one chapter. Somehow, I never found a place for the sassy Ms. Espresso in Just Another Day 2. The original chapter titles were a tongue-in-cheek reference to the classic computer game, Doom.

Part 1: The Real

The day began just like any other. I awoke from my plop! Plutonium(tm) induced sleep to find a notification on my Google Contact retina display. Isabella, a fellow co-worker, had written a painstaking report on the state of fizz! Incorporated's ongoing research and development for Project Dandelion. I fully intended to give her report the attention it deserved, but not before my morning espresso. As I entered into the kitchen, I heard a familiar voice say, "Good morning, G-Man. The usual?" It was my never disappointing Ms. Espresso machine. My daily jump start with just a hint of sassiness. I replied rather humorously, "You know how I like it, baby." Ms. Espresso quickly responded, "One extra fizzy espresso coming up, buttercup." I sat down at the usual bar stool beside the counter and proceeded to browse through the day's news on my retina display: "Martian settlers found to be engaging in illegal activity on the red planet." "Consumption of food linked to aging process, one scientific study finds." "Honey Boo Boo is pregnant again; with her seventh child, Bubble Gum." "Disneyland Resort announces plans for their centennial celebration set to kick off on July 17th, 2055." That is mainstream news for you. A mixed bag.

It was an age without pain or sorrow. Beings of splendor would circle a precious white light in a song and dance of pure merriment, basking in the forces of love. It was paradise. But it was not destined to remain this way forever. For having never experienced pain, these beings were unable to truly appreciate that paradise. This became the yin and the yang of existence. One cannot appreciate happiness without knowing sadness, and one cannot know sadness without knowing happiness. Thus, the white light opened the door to a new form of being. One which most welcomed with excitement and a genuine sense of wonder. Some, however, were unwilling to make the change, wishing to remain in their euphoric state. One gutsy being would even try to seize power for itself, only to be cast out from the experience of either world. As a brave new frontier - The Universe - came into being, darkness was separated from the light, and solid masses began to take shape. They came to be known as planets and stars. Soon, the breath of life - the essence of being in the new world - gave way to organisms of all shapes, sizes and colors. It was simply majestic to behold. The beings of the light entered into their new existence with a strange sense not known to them before. That which is the unknown. What will they be? Whatever will be, will be...

It is, after all, a work of fiction. As usual, you may find a few truths along the way!

Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end. But shrouded within every story is a secret. There is no beginning, and there is no end. For something had always set the stage for the play to follow, and for when the final curtain had fallen, another play was set to begin; with the same players dressed for different parts. Throughout the untold ages, beings have fought, died and killed for the things they believed in. Sparked by their innate passions. Passion in and of itself is glorious. For without it, beings would never find their true calling. Their reason for being in the first place. In that passion, they have the potential to find love. The force for which none is greater. With love comes compassion and understanding. With these things comes oneness with all that was, is or ever will be. In essence, passion is an uncontrollable emotion. That which can also drive beings away from love; and drive them instead toward hate. The force which only serves to blind and confuse. If love opens a door, hate closes a door. Passion is therefore an eternal struggle; with the same players dressed for different parts. Every story has a middle.

(Aborted)A Day at Life Inc. is a story I conceived of last year while writing Departing a Day at Gridline Games. A semi-fictional take on office life at Gridline Games (and beyond!). The second chapter was a very personal endeavor. One which at times felt almost as if it were jumping off the page! It turned out being a very emotionally moving writing experience. Needless to say, the narrator of that story was someone very near to me. It was an immense joy to spend time with them again, even if it had only been a work of fiction. The final set of paragraphs literally left me in tears. They flowed down, up and every other which way.

Now, we set sail for a new adventure. One which tells the origin not only of Gridline Games, but of everything that came before! And when I say before, I really mean before. We may even learn where the light came from. Maybe. Please remain seated at all times, and remember, it is just a ride!

Darkness which filled the void later to be known as the universe. A marvelous formation appeared in the center of that void. It came to be known as light, and it was the source of all things. It was a beautiful light; one which would eventually spread throughout the entire cosmos. Many solid masses began to form out of this light. They came to be known as planets and stars. But the most marvelous thing of all had yet to happen. Life! The light gave way to living organisms of all shapes, sizes and colors. What a marvel it was! Soon, a species capable of great intellect appeared. They came to be known as humans. They were initially confused by the light. They would come to give it many different names. Throughout the eons, many human wars would be fought over the light. Some humans would even try to extinguish the light. They would all fail; for the light is in all things, and all things are the light. Everything the light touches is our kingdom. Wait, that last part there is from The Lion King! There remains a selective few that know the truth about how the light originally came to be, but they have learned to keep this truth to themselves; for they know that the beings of the universe are not yet ready...

Out of the light came stories, and among them was a prequel to A Final Day at Gridline Games. One which will reveal all that needs to be known about Gridline Games, and possibly much more! You may weep openly, and that is okay. The tears too are made of the light!

It establishes the idea that each story would be told from a different person's point of view. I believe this one to be that of Mark Gillie. Gridline Games' Co-CEO.

A thought provoking story about office life... and aliens. Then, in a cosmic turn of events, Goalsoft gave way to Gridline Games, and a new story was unearthed.

The "game" was never finished, and used a bunch of pre-existing art from RPG Maker 2000, but it apparently had a story of some sort. The first spiritual successor to A Day at Gridline Games, A Final Day at Gridline Games, touched on some of the more alien bits. Alas, the narrator in this one will forever remain a mystery. He looks like an FBI agent. I wonder if he dies at the end...
